An SSL certificate can be valid for at most 199 days now and 99 days from 24 February 2027, when the CAs we automate stop issuing the longer certificate. From 24 February 2029 the limit becomes 46 days. The rule behind it is CA/Browser Forum SC-081, which sets 200, 100 and 47 days from 15 March of each of those years; the certificate is issued a day shorter. Manual renewal does not scale. SSL Automation from FairSSL renews automatically, and your yearly price is the same however often the certificate is reissued. One certificate with automation covers up to 25 servers.

Which certificate should I choose for a single domain?

A DV certificate. Our lowest-priced one is Sectigo PositiveSSL, and RapidSSL from DigiCert can be renewed automatically with SSL Automation. Both cover the domain with and without www.

When do SSL lifetimes change?

The CA/Browser Forum adopted a phased reduction in 2025 (SC-081): 200 days, 100 days from 15 March 2027 and 47 days from 15 March 2029. In practice the dates are earlier and the numbers a day lower, because each CA stops ahead of the rule and issues with a day of headroom. At the CAs we automate that means 199 days now, 99 days from 24 February 2027 and 46 days from 24 February 2029. Without automation, it becomes an administrative nightmare.

Does SSL cost more as certificate lifetimes get shorter?

No. You pay for an order period, typically one year, and the price stays the same no matter how many times the certificate is reissued within that period. Since 15 March 2026 certificates must be replaced more often, and from 24 February 2027 more often still, but every reissue is included in the price. With SSL Automation from FairSSL, renewal happens automatically.

What does ACME cost at FairSSL?

The ACME service fee is €33 per main certificate per year, on top of the certificate price. One fee covers up to 25 servers using that certificate, and each server gets its own reissued certificate free. SAN changes and reissues are exempt, and additional ACME clients on the same certificate are free. A separate certificate is priced from scratch: its own price plus the fee.

What is the difference between OV and EV?

Both require organisation validation. OV displays the organisation name in the certificate details. EV provides the highest level of validation: the CA verifies the organisation's legal existence, physical address and operational status. Some browsers display the organisation name more prominently with EV. EV does not support wildcards.

Can I add multiple domain names to a single certificate?

Yes. Most certificates support SAN (Subject Alternative Names). You can mix single domains and wildcards in one certificate. For example, *.fairssl.dk + *.app.fairssl.dk + legacy.example.com.

What is pre-validation?

With pre-validation, the CA approves your organisation in advance. You can then issue OV/EV certificates instantly for up to 1 year without waiting for a new validation. Thawte and DigiCert support automatic pre-validation. GlobalSign requires us to set it up manually: contact us.

Do EV certificates support wildcards?

No. EV certificates do not support wildcards. You can add specific domain names as SANs, but not *.domain.com.

Do I need to change anything now?

If you already use ACME (Certbot, simple-acme, acme.sh) and renew automatically, you are well positioned. If you renew manually, you should migrate to ACME now.
